You may be ready for more independence in treatment without being ready to manage everything on your own. You may have made progress in IOP or another structured program and still benefit from ongoing clinical support. Or, your needs may be stable enough to begin treatment with less frequent care.
Our outpatient program provides individualized care at our addiction treatment center in Decatur while you stay active in your career, family, and daily routine. With less weekly structure than IOP, you have more independence to apply what you learn between appointments. You can also bring new challenges into treatment as they arise in everyday life.
Outpatient care can address substance use, behavioral addictions, mental health conditions, or co-occurring concerns. Your clinical needs guide whether you begin at this level or enter OP after more intensive treatment.
Outpatient treatment may fit when you can manage most of your week independently but still benefit from clinical support. You may be maintaining work, relationships, and daily routines while continuing to address symptoms, triggers, or behaviors that affect your progress.
Some clients enter OP after our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or another structured program when they no longer need frequent treatment sessions. Others may begin at this level when their symptoms are stable and a clinical assessment supports less intensive care.
OP provides continued treatment with less weekly structure than higher levels of care. If your symptoms, safety, or functioning indicate that you need more support, we may recommend our IOP, Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), or a medical detox instead.
Most clients in our outpatient program attend therapy 2 to 4 times per week, based on their individual needs. This gives you more time between sessions to manage your career, relationships, and everyday responsibilities independently. Morning, afternoon, and evening time frames can provide additional flexibility around your schedule.
Your sessions can focus on challenges that emerge between appointments, including triggers, stress, emotional symptoms, or behaviors that could affect your progress. You can bring current situations into treatment and strengthen the coping and relapse-prevention skills you use outside of care.
Greater independence does not mean you are expected to manage recovery without support. OP provides continued accountability and clinical guidance while you practice maintaining progress with less frequent treatment.
Your outpatient treatment plan focuses on the clinical needs that remain as you manage more of your recovery independently. Care may include individual therapy, group counseling, and educational workshops based on your treatment goals. CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed therapy may help you address thought patterns, emotional regulation, coping skills, and underlying trauma.
Educational workshops can reinforce practical skills for relapse prevention, communication, and healthier daily routines. Mindfulness, meditation, and stress-management techniques may also be incorporated to support emotional well-being outside treatment.
Your treatment priorities can change as you make progress or encounter new challenges. This allows sessions to focus on the symptoms, triggers, coping skills, or relapse risks that still require clinical attention.

Needing less structured care does not mean co-occurring treatment needs become separate. If you have a substance use disorder and a mental health condition, outpatient care can continue addressing both within the same treatment plan. Treatment priorities can reflect how each condition affects your symptoms, functioning, and recovery.
The same integrated approach can apply when a behavioral addiction occurs with a mental health condition. Gambling, gaming, or compulsive sexual behaviors may occur alongside anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, or other mental health concerns. Your treatment plan can address the concerns that apply to you rather than assuming every client has the same combination of conditions.
For clients stepping down from PHP or IOP, integrated care can continue as treatment becomes less frequent. Your care team adjusts treatment priorities based on the symptoms, triggers, and behaviors still affecting your stability, functioning, and progress.
Outpatient treatment remains appropriate while it provides enough support for your symptoms, stability, and daily functioning. Your care team reviews your progress and how you manage triggers, symptoms, and responsibilities between sessions. These factors help determine whether you should continue at the outpatient level.
If your symptoms worsen or you need more frequent clinical support, we can reassess whether IOP or PHP is more appropriate. If OP continues to meet your needs, your treatment goals can be adjusted as you make progress and encounter new challenges.
When you no longer need structured outpatient treatment, our aftercare program can provide continued recovery support. This gives you another level of connection after regular treatment sessions are no longer needed.
